Rijkaard tempted by City: Former Barcelona coach in line if Arab owners decide to axe HughesFrank Rijkaard is being lined up as Manchester City manager for next season if the billionaire owners from Abu Dhabi decide that Mark Hughes is not equipped to steer the club to Champions League qualification.
Rijkaard, who quit as Barcelona coach last summer after winning the European Cup and two league titles in his five seasons at the Catalan club, is considering a number of offers after taking a year's sabbatical from the game.
But a source close to the 45-year-old Dutchman says that there are 'possibilities' regarding Manchester City, who would be able to afford an offer of wages and funds in the transfer market that would outbid any other team.
Rijkaard, the former coach of the Holland national team, will be in demand and is also likely to be considered for the job at AC Milan if Carlo Ancelotti were to leave for Chelsea, or Ajax, where Marco van Basten has just resigned.
City, who take on Manchester United at Old Trafford today, have had a mixed first season under Hughes' control, with the millions of Sheik Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yet to have a real impact on the field.
Hughes is regarded as one of the best British managers in the game but, apart from £34million Robinho last August, City have struggled to pull in star signings, most notably in the failed attempt to sing Kaka from AC Milan in January.
The current failed attempt to sign Kaka from AC Milan in January. The current team have been no better than mid-table and made embarrassing early exits from the Carling and FA Cups, although Hughes, who was appointed by the previous owner Thaskin Shinawatra last June, did guide them to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Rijkaard has contacts in Spain, Holland and Italy, where he was a member of the great AC Milan team who won two European Cups. He later won the trophy for a third time, with Ajax in 1995.
His status would be likely to attract the star names whom City have struggled to bring to the North West. Real Madrid striker Raul, linked with a move to City last week, demonstrated the struggle the club have to had to endure. 'It is true that there was an offer from Manchester City, but I'm not leaving Madrid,' said the Spaniard. 'I'm not crazy.'
City have consistently backed Hughes in statements of support and in the transfer market, but is it likely that a final decision on whether he is the man to take the club to the next level will be made later this month.
Tevez leaning towards exit
Argentina forward indicates he could leave United in summerCarlos Tevez has given his strongest indication yet that he will leave Manchester united in the summer.
The Argentine is currently nearing the end of a two-year loan deal at Old Trafford, and Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said the club are keen to extend his stay.
But speculation over the forward's future continues to linger and during Wednesday night's 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over Arsenal, Tevez looked frustrated when he was replaced by striker Dimitar Berbatov on 66 minutes.
And now the 25-year-old has revealed he is leaning more towards a departure come the end of the season, with the Primera Division his preferred destination.
Tevez told Cadena COPE: "It's true I've spent a lot of time on the bench and I'd like to play more. But every time I'm given a chance I do all I can to do well and take full advantage.
"Yes, it's like that, it's true I see myself more leaving United than staying here.
Spain
"I don't see why I should lie to people or anything because the fans support me a lot as you can see. So I don't have any reason to lie to them.
"While I wear the United shirt I will leave my life on the pitch. You can see that in every game I play. I respect people a lot and I'm grateful to them.
"My future? I don't know what will happen for my future. I would like to go to Spain, yes, but I don't know yet.
"I have no preference for a team . . . we'll see.
"With respect to the fans and the history of Manchester United, I don't want to leave the club. But from a personal aspect, my exit will be the best solution.
