CARLO ANCELOTTI has put Philippe Mexes on top of his Chelsea hitlist to replace Ricardo Carvalho.
Roma are willing to do business for the centre-back at around £12million.
Boss Ancelotti, a former Roma player, knows the Italians need to cash in after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Frenchman Mexes, 27, has been one of Italy's top defensive imports since he signed from Auxerre in 2004 for £5m.
And he fits into Ancelotti's plans after Carvalho made it clear he wants out of Stamford Bridge.
Carvalho, 31, accused Chelsea of not giving him enough support when he had a knee injury last season and wants to team up with ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho at Inter.
Inter owner Massimo Moratti confirmed he has opened negotiations with Chelsea for Carvalho at Mourinho's request.

Burdisso: Happy at Inter

..Nicolas Burdisso's agent has distanced his client from reports suggesting he could join Chelsea this summer.
Seculation has surfaced claiming the Argentine centre-half could be used as a makeweight in Inter's pursuit of Blues duo Deco and Ricardo Carvalho.
owever, Burdisso's representative insists there is no substance to the rumours and claims there has been no contact with the Stamford Bridge outfit.
"We know nothing about it," Fernando Hidalgo told FcInterNews.
"Inter have not communicated anything to us on this matter and every day there is always room for fantasy in the papers."
Burdisso has been with Inter since completing a switch from Boca Juniors in 2004 and Hidalgo insists the defender has given no indication that he is looking to move on.
"I hear from him daily, but we do not chat about non-existent things," he added.
"Nicolas has said time and again that he wants to stay at Inter. If something new will come up, we will evaluate it. But, to date, there is nothing."

BARCA IN £25M ASH GRAB
ABOVE: Ashley Young There has been no contact yet but the club are firming up their plans at the moment. Spanish source
20th June 2009 By Danny FullbrookBARCELONA are ready to launch a £25m bid for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.
The European champions tracked the exciting 23-year-old all last season.
And now they are ready to test Villa’s resolve with a concrete bid.
Barca have decided to avoid competing with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United for Franck Ribery, and are believed to have dropped their interest in Manchester City’s Robinho.
Instead Pep Guardiola has made Young one of his summer targets.
The Barca boss has been impressed with the progress that Young has made at Villa Park since his £10m move from
Watford in January 2007.
There is a chance that Barca might try and tempt Martin O’Neill to allow Young to go by including former Arsenal midfielder Aleksandr Hleb in the deal, with the Villa boss already having shown interest in the player.
Young’s pace and youth suit the Barca team and the Young Footballer of the Year is in the right price bracket for Barca.
O’Neill will not want him to go, but a Spanish source said last night: ‘‘Young has been impressive all last year with Villa and at times with England. He finished the season well and he is a player that Guardiola likes.
‘‘He has been following him for a while and we hope that he will want to come to a club as big as Barca and move to Spain.

20th June 2009 By Danny FullbrookVALENCIA want David Villa to sign for Chelsea because Roman Abramovich has made the biggest offer for the star striker.
here is a bid on the table of £35m from Chelsea for the Spanish hitman, and that has not been matched by Real Madrid. The player himself is believed to want to stay in Spain with Madrid.
But Valencia president Manuel Llorente has told Villa that he needs to go to Chelsea for the sake of the club.
Valencia face crippling debts so they need to raise as much cash as possible this summer from their star assets.
Madrid as yet have only bid £31.8m and have offered a number of players in exchange.
But Valencia need hard cash which is why they want Villa to do his duty for the club and sign for Chelsea.
Llorente said: ‘’It is not possible for Villa to stay here. Today the best offer that we have is from Chelsea and I need to speak to the player about his future.’’
Villa is currently on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup and has said he will announce his decision at the end of the tournament.
But it is clear at the moment that Valencia are trying to put pressure on the 28-year-old to sign for Chelsea. The club want a decision by July 1.
